Multiple Stressors

Decreased pH and rising temperatures may have synergistic effects on marine organisms that would not be predicted from the results of single-stressor experiments.  We are measuring the combined effects of increased temperature and decreased pH on the model organism Strongylocentrotus purpuratus (the purple sea urchin), evaluating consequences of combined stressors for growth, respiration, and gene expression. (In collaboration with Dr. Jaqueline Padilla-GamiƱo, UCSB)

The CO2 system in our lab allows us to precisely control and monitor carbonate chemistry for larval rearing experiments
